In a 5-4 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court today legalized gay marriage in all 50 states.  Gay marriage had previously been legal in 37 states.

In addition to holding that it is unconstitutional to deny gays and lesbians the right to marry, today’s decision means that all states—including the most recent holdouts—must recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states.

Justice Kennedy wrote the majority opinion, and Chief Justice Roberts and Justices Scalia, Thomas, and Alito all penned separate, blistering dissents.
