{"id":1176,"date":"2012-01-12T03:01:34","date_gmt":"2012-01-12T03:01:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/scoresbyfamilylaw.com\/blog\/?p=1176"},"modified":"2019-11-23T22:26:41","modified_gmt":"2019-11-24T05:26:41","slug":"divorce-can-be-deadly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scoresbyfamilylaw.com\/blog\/2012\/01\/12\/divorce-can-be-deadly\/","title":{"rendered":"Divorce can be Deadly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Is divorce fatal?\u00a0 A recent University of Arizona study found that divorcees have a\u00a0 23 percent greater risk of premature death than do married couples.\u00a0\u00a0 According to the study, divorced men had a 31 percent greater chance of early death than married men, while divorced women faced an 18 percent greater risk than their married counterparts.\u00a0 The study reported that the risks associated with divorce are as serious as the risks of smoking 15 cigarettes a day, being sedentary, drinking heavily, and being overweight.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The study did not establish a cause-and-effect relationship between divorce and early death.\u00a0 The study measured correlation, not causation.\u00a0 In other words, it&#8217;s not clear whether poor health leads to divorce, whether divorce leads to poor health, or whether other factors\u00a0may cause\u00a0both poor health <em>and<\/em> a higher incidence of divorce.\u00a0 For example, substance abuse may lead to both divorce <em>and<\/em> premature death.\u00a0 In short, while the study is interesting, you shouldn&#8217;t worry that if you are divorced or getting divorced you will automatically die young.\u00a0 Research on this subject is ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>I was unable to find the full study online.\u00a0 It was published in the journal <em>Perspectives on Psychological Science<\/em>, and the journal and study are only available by paid subscription.\u00a0\u00a0 A summary of the study was published in the January 10, 2012 edition of\u00a0 <em>The Arizona Republic<\/em> newspaper and is available now at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/news\/articles\/2011\/12\/29\/20111229ua-study-divorce-can-raise-risk-early-death.html\">http:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/news\/articles\/2011\/12\/29\/20111229ua-study-divorce-can-raise-risk-early-death.html<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright \u00a9 2012 by Scoresby Family Law \u2013 J.
